Origins
Christ Church Melton has stood at the heart of our community for over 150 years. Established on land set aside in 1851 for the Church of England, our parish is one of the oldest in Melbourne’s western suburbs. Construction of the original stone church began in the early 1860s, and despite delays due to funding challenges, the first services were held in January 1869.
Traditional English
Just a few years later, the building was officially consecrated by Bishop Charles Perry in January 1872. Designed in the style of a traditional English village church, the building reflected the faith and aspirations of Melton’s early settlers—especially the pioneering Staughton family, whose legacy is deeply tied to our church.

About
By the early 20th century, Christ Church had become a recognised landmark and spiritual home for generations. In 1922, the church celebrated its 50th Jubilee with a commemorative service and booklet honoring the community’s devotion and history. As the decades passed, time took its toll on the original building. In the late 1980s, the aging stone structure was respectfully decommissioned due to safety concerns.
Today
A new church building, completed in 1985, now stands on the same historic site at 2–4 Unitt Street, Melton, continuing our mission with modern facilities and a renewed spirit. Today, Christ Church remains a vibrant parish, embracing both tradition and innovation. We livestream our services, host community outreach programs, and continue to grow in faith, just as we have since our doors first opened in the 19th century. Meet our Vicar
The Rev. Ian Hennebry
Ian came to Christ Church in January 2025 having previously led a United Benefice of three parishes in the North East of England. He has settled into life in the community very quickly and is thoroughly enjoying the challenge of being the Anglican vicar of Melton, as well as living closer to his children and Australian grandchildren.
Since becoming a Christian at university Ian has served his vocation within the context of education, mission, music, chaplaincy and ordained ministry in the United Kingdom, Argentina, Switzerland and Germany. He is pleased to be able to use his experience and gifts to serve Jesus Christ here in Melton.
